Dexter is approximately 3-4 years old and a German Shepherd Mix. We are guessing he may be mixed with a Dutch Shepherd, but was found as a stray so we have no way of knowing for sure. Dexter weighs in at approximately 70-75 pounds.
Dexter has been vet checked, fully vaccinated, neutered, heartworm tested negative, microchipped, and is current on his flea/tick/heartworm preventatives.
Dexter has been introduced to other dogs and does alright with most of them. He is very dominant in nature and seems to do best with other female dogs. He needs proper introductions and leadership when meeting new dogs and then he does well. Dexter has also been introduced to cats and is tolerant of them, but also likes to chase them. When proper leadership and rules in the home, he does well with cats that are dog-saavy.
Dexter is very aloof when meeting new people -- he is curious, but cautious. Dexter is also very leery of men and takes a tremendous amount of time to warm up to them and needs a lot of patience and persistence. Dexter is also very leery of children and he would like to go to a home with kids ages 10 years and up. Dexter becomes very loyal and bonds strongly once he trusts you. He needs a firm owner, one who is willing to set the rules in place and enforce them.
Dexter is extremely smart, sometimes too smart for his own good! He is kennel trained and housetrained and knows many commands - come, sit, down, stay, kennel up, wait, heel, shake and he is working on learning more too. Dexter is high energy and needs daily exercise. He would be happy to run 1-2 miles everyday! Dexter needs a home with GSD experience who will work with him on his quirks and be understanding and patient...are you that person?
